# What gas do I need and how long will it last?

## Choosing and maintaining the right gas supply is crucial for your enomatic system's performance and wine preservation capabilities.

The gas you use is critical to your Enomatic system’s performance and to keeping your wines tasting their best. While Enomatic machines can run on either **food-grade nitrogen** or **high-purity argon**, extensive testing shows that **argon offers superior wine preservation**. That’s why we recommend it for 99% of venues.

For 99% of our clients, we recommend [D-size high purity argon from Supagas](https://www.supagas.com.au/products/ZXARGONHP).

### Recommended gas by model

- **Unica Romas and Unica Starts:** High Purity Argon (E938)
- **Unica Bubbles:** Food-grade Carbon Dioxide (E290, 100%)
- **Unica Bag:** No gas required

When designing cabinetry to fit your [D size gas bottle](https://www.supagas.com.au/products/ZXARGONHP), please note that the cylinder is taller once it has the regulator in place. The dimensions will be 745 H x 180 D mm.

Argon purity levels

- **High Purity Argon (HP, 99.99%)** – Ideal for hospitality wine service
- **Ultra High Purity Argon (UHP, 99.999%)** – Used for lab or ultra-sensitive applications
- The difference is negligible for wine, so **HP Argon provides the best balance of performance and value**

### Gas supply and consumption

- **Supplier:** We recommend **Supagas** as they are available Australia-wide
- **Cylinder size:** D-size for an 8-bottle machine.
- **Duration:** Most hospitality clients find that they get around **6 months per D-sized cylinder** – depending on usage, bottle turnover, and system size.

### Best practices

- Always use **food-grade, high-purity gas**.
- Keep a backup cylinder on hand, if possible.
- Check gas levels regularly and ensure connections are sealed properly.
- Refer to the Argon gas safety data sheet (SDS) [here](https://www.winepreservationsystems.com/hubfs/3288378_001_001.pdf)or the Carbon Dioxide (C02) gas safety sheet (SDS) [here](https://www.winepreservationsystems.com/hubfs/3139255_001_001.pdf) for proper storage information.
